Long before Brazil appeared on European maps, brazil meant a red dyewood arriving from the East Indies. Medieval Europeans apparently saw its glowing color and connected it with embers, perhaps tying it to a Germanic burning-root related to *bhreu-, “to boil or burn.” But that explanation is not secure: the term may instead have traveled from Arabic or another Asian language, with Italian verzino keeping the mystery alive. When Pedro Álvares Cabral reached South America in 1500, the land was first called Santa Cruz; within a decade, its valuable red dye tree had encouraged the map-label terra de brasil, “land of red dyewood.” Add Old English wudu, the ancient Germanic word for tree and timber, and the compound becomes wonderfully literal: Brazil’s ember-colored wood. The tree’s legacy survives not only in the country’s name but in violin bows and in brazilin, whose oxidation produces the deeper red pigment brazilein.
