Picture a gland as a tiny factory with two possible delivery systems: one ships its product into the bloodstream, while the other sends it down a pipe to a surface or cavity. That contrast is packed into Greek: exō means “outside,” and the scientific element -crine comes from krinein, “to separate” or “sift.” In 1855, Claude Bernard’s work on internal secretion helped establish the biological distinction that later made pairs such as exocrine and endocrine so useful. Sweat, saliva, tears, and pancreatic juice all take the outward route; the pancreas manages the astonishing trick of using both routes at once. One caution for vocabulary hunters: English crine can also mean “hair” through a separate Latin-and-French history, but that is not the crine in exocrine. Remember the image: endocrine pours into the inner river of blood, while exocrine exits through a pipe.
